Neopentylglycol (NPG), or 2, 2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol, is mainly used as a building block for coating resins such as saturated polyesters (major application in powder coatings), alkyds (e.g. coating metal furniture and fixtures),  unsaturated polyesters (e.g. artificial marble and gelcoat for boats), and finally for the production of polyurethane resins (polyester polyol and polycarbonate diol).
Neopentylglycol provides high hydrolytic stability, high UV stability (UVA/UVB), weatherability, adhesion and a good balance between hardness and flexibility.

Others
Neopentylglycol is utilised in the production of polyester lubricants and plasticizers

Lubricants :
Neopentyl Glycol Ester is a fatty ester, which exhibits low viscosity and high thermal stability.
Functions: Neopentyl Glycol Ester
Product Applications: Grinding oils, Semi-synthetics, Soluble oils, Synthetics
Product Classes: Lubricants, Metalworking & Grease, Lubricity Additive

Uses
Neopentyl glycol is used primarily in base resins for coatings.
Important uses of Neopentyl glycol are also found in hydraulic fluids, synthetic lubricant oils, greases, metal-working fluids and aircraft engine lubricants.
Other applications of Neopentyl glycol include textiles, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, plasticisers and petroleum

Neopentyl glycol (NPG, IUPAC name 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol) is an important industrial intermediate used in the synthesis of polyesters, especially resins for airplane or boat manufacturing. The neopentyl structure provides excellent resistance to light, heat, and hydrolysis. NPG is also being used in a variety of formulations in varnish coatings, synthetic lubricants, and plasticizers.

Neo pentyl glycol (IUPAC name 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol) is an organic chemical compound. It is used in the synthesis of polyesters, paints, lubricants, and plasticizers. When used in the manufacture of polyesters, it enhances the stability of the product towards heat, light, and water. By esterification reaction with fatty or carboxylic acids, synthetic lubricating esters with reduced potential for oxidation or hydrolysis, compared to natural esters, can be produced.

Technology
There are two main routes to Neopentyl glycol using isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde.
In one, the raw materials react with a strongly alkaline catalyst to form Neopentyl glycol.
But, large amounts of formate salts are formed as byproduct and the process is only economically viable when a profitable use is found for the formate.

In a second and more common process, the aldolisation reaction is carried out in the presence of an amine catalyst.
This is further hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst and the molten Neopentyl glycol is solidified by means of a flaking roll, or a crystallising or cooling belt.

Health and safety
Neopentyl glycol is a white, crystalline solid with a mint-like odour.
Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air and it reacts violently with oxidants.

Neopentyl glycol, also known as Dimethylolpropan, is a hydroscopic crystalline organic chemical compound, colorless-to-white in color. Neopentyl glycol is industrially synthesized by the aldol reaction of formaldehyde and isobutyraldehyde, which results in formation of intermediate hydroxypivaldehyde. This can be converted to neopentyl glycol through catalytic hydrogenation of aldehyde group to an alcohol group.

The major driver for global neopentyl glycol market is the increasing use of neopentyl glycol as a base resin for coatings, hydraulic fuels, greases, and aircraft engine lubricant. Resistance to oxidation, non-polar chemical nature, and enhanced stability towards heat, light, and water are some of the superior properties it possess.

Neopentyl glycol is soluble in water, benzene, chloroform, ethanol, and diethyl ether. Furthermore, its demand is increasing due to its growing use as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of resins, polyester, alkyd resins, paints, synthetic lubricants, adhesives, and others. It is also used as a base product for plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fragrances, fabric softeners, vibration dampers, and others.

The global neopentyl glycol market is expected to witness a substantial growth due to the increasing penetration of nepentyl glycol in paints and coatings, which is complementary to various end-use industries such as automotive, aerospace, ship building, construction, among others. Heavy investments in infrastructure projects in emerging countries and the new product development in pharmaceuticals and personal care products are likely to offer substantial opportunities to neopentyl glycol

Neopentyl Glycol, NPG (2, 2-dimethylpropane-1, 3-diol) is the standard diol for high performance coating resins.
The polyesters synthesized by NPG with saturated or unsaturated di-acids offer a great ingredient for paints, lubricants, plasticizers and fiberglass-reinforced plastics applications. NPG enhances stability toward heat, light, and water.
Neopentylglycol achieves high performance of resins due to its resistance to oxidation, its non-polar chemical nature, and steric retardation of hydrolysis.
Most polyester resin formulations contain Neopentylglycol as the sole glycol component, or feature neopentyl glycol in conjunction with a modifying glycol to achieve the desired properties.

Neopentylglycol is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 127⁰C.
This solid flake form has a tendency to fuse together and form a block, becoming difficult to separate, transfer, and handle.

There are several forms of Neopentylglycol available for selection, depending on conditions specified for manufacturing and application:
Molten Neopentylglycol, transported at high temperature, ships in heated tank trucks.
For molten Neopentylglycol to arrive at the plant intact  it is necessary for the heated storage tank to maintain a temperature at or above 140⁰C.

A slurry / suspension form of NPG in water (90% NPG by weight) is a liquid at or above 38°C.
This form of Neopentylglycol ships in bulk at temperatures ranging from 50 – 70⁰C, enabling storage at a much lower temperature than molten NPG, at around 55 – 60⁰C.

The flake form of Neopentylene glycol arrives in bags with the potential to agglomerate on storage.

Neopentylglycol has a combination of great properties but is rather complicated to handle; thus, we are continuously searching for a way to make handling easier.
In contrast, it is found that MPO(2-methyl-1, 3-propanediol) has an equivalent resistance against UV light combined with humidity.

Conventional wisdom previously held that the degradation process through oxidation occurred  via UV-initiated radical chain propagation.
Instead of a cleaving C-C bond, we have found that  the liability of related C-H bond impacts the propagation rate and ultimately the rate of damage to a polymer film.
A FMOC analysis indicated the C-H bond next to the ester links are the most vulnerable to oxidation attack.
This theory offers only a minor difference between Neopentylglycol and MPO in weatherability, confirmed by accelerated aging tests.
