If you need any advice please do not hesitate to contact us as we are happy to help.

General industry practice is to store Glycol Ether PM in carbon steel vessels.
Avoid contact with air when storing for long periods of time.
Store only in tightly closed, properly vented containers away from heat, sparks, open flame or strong oxidizing agents.
Use only non-sparking tools.
Ground containers before beginning transfer. Electrical equipment should conform to national electric code.
Handle empty containers carefully. Flammable, combustible residue remains after emptying.
Store in properly lined steel or stainless steel to avoid slight discoloration from mild steel.
Glycol ethers should never be stored or handled in copper or copper alloys.
This product may absorb water if exposed to air

Methoxy Propanol possesses properties similar to those of methoxyethanol and ethoxyethanol and used in the same applications, particularly in coatings and printing inks.

Selected applications are given below.
Printing inks
Methoxy Propanol is eminently suitable for use in printing inks, e.g. for cellulose nitrate flexographic inks. It can also be used in gravure inks.
Methoxy Propanol regulates, i. e. retards, the drying of printing inks, but two facts should be noted in this respect.
Methoxy Propanol (evaporation rate= 22; ether = 1) dries more rapidly than ethoxyethanol (evaporation rate = 43).
In other words, somewhat greater amounts are required to retard drying.

A general rule is that drying regulators incur the risk of solvent retention and blocking if their proportion is too high or if inadequate time is allowed for drying.
This also applies to Methoxy Propanol. Methoxy Propanol can also be used for cleaning printing plates and for thinning printing inks.

Coatings Industry
The main application for Methoxy Propanol in the coatings industry is the production of cellulose nitrate lacquers.
The initial solutions can be thinned with many cheap diluents, yet still dry to give clear, transparent coatings of good strength.
Methoxy Propanol improves the brushability, levelling and gloss of air-drying paints and prevents blushing.

It is included in formulations for paints applied by a spray-gun for the purpose of improving gloss and adhesion.
Other applications for Methoxy Propanol are as follows:

Component in copying fluids (particularly together with alcohols, inks, and felt-tip pen inks)
Component in the solvent phase for road marking paints
Solvent or leather finishes and stamp pad inks
Additive in cleaners, e. g. for metals, windows and floors
Component in the solvent phase for wood stains and polishes
Starting material in the production of Methoxypropyl Acetate, which is also an excellent solvent
Component in liquids for the evaporative cooling of engines, particularly large diesel engines.
Starting material in the production of esters that may be used as plasticizers.

It is also used as a solvent in manufacturing processes for the chemical, automotive and agricultural industries and in paint, lacquer and varnishes. It is used as a coalescing agent in water-based paints and inks where it promotes polymer fusion during the drying process.
Methoxy propanol is formulated into a wide range of cleaners for industrial and commercial use such as those for ovens, glass, hard surfaces, floors, carpets and upholstery, as well as in speciality sanitation products such as swimming pool cleaners. It is also present in many everyday products such as polish, laundry aids, caulk, sealants, pesticides, inks for ballpoint and felt-tip pens, synthetic resin and rubber adhesives.

2-Methoxy-1-propanol is found as an impurity in propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME), which is a solvent used in various products such as industrial and consumer paints.
2-Methoxy-1-propanol may also be found as an impurity in cosmetics (nail polish and nail polish remover), at very low levels.

Methoxypropanol’s application is similar with propylene glycol as a low volatile solvent, but better dissolving is expected. Methoxypropanol is used to improve dissolving power, drying time, and flow. It is also known to be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of proton pump inhibitor (Rabeprazole Sodium).

How is it produced?
Methoxy propanol is produced by the reaction of 1,2-epoxy propane and methanol in the presence of a catalyst, and this is then followed by distillation.

The worldwide annual production of methoxy propanol is approximately 100,000 to 500,000 tonnes.

How is it stored and distributed?
Methoxy propanol has a specific gravity of 0.924 and a flash point of 33° C and is therefore highly flammable so should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area that is free from sources of ignition.  For transport purposes, methoxy propanol is classified as packing group III and hazard class 3 and is an irritant.

What is Methoxy Propanol (PM) used for?
Methoxy propanol is predominately used in the manufacture of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (otherwise known as PMA) and is also used in industrial and commercial products including paints, varnishes, inks, synthetic resin and rubber adhesives, and automotive and oven cleaners.  It is also used as a cleaning agent in the LCD and electronics industry.

Propylene glycol methyl ether (PGME or 1-methoxy-2-propanol) is an organic solvent with a wide variety of industrial and commercial uses.
Similar to other glycol ethers, it is used as a carrier/solvent in printing/writing inks and paints/coatings.
It also finds use as an industrial and commercial paint stripper. It is used as an antifreeze in diesel engines.

1-methoxy-2-propanol appears as a colorless liquid. Flash point near 89°F. Less dense than water. Contact irritates skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Methoxypropanol is mainly used in coatings and printing inks.

METHOXY-2-PROPANOL is a methoxy alcohol derivative. The ether being relatively unreactive. Flammable and/or toxic gases are generated by the combination of alcohols with alkali metals, nitrides, and strong reducing agents. They react with oxoacids and carboxylic acids to form esters plus water. Oxidizing agents convert them to aldehydes or ketones. Alcohols exhibit both weak acid and weak base behavior. They may initiate the polymerization of isocyanates and epoxides.

Storage and Handling
Methoxy propanol and its vapours are flammable. It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated place away from sources of ignition. It must be isolated from incompatible materials such as strong oxidizers, bases and acids.
Methoxy propanol is a mild, but usually temporary, irritant to the eyes. Repeated or prolonged contact with the skin may cause irritation, and in very large amounts skin absorption may cause drowsiness or dizziness. High levels of methoxy propanol vapour may produce eye, nose and throat irritation, and at very high levels may produce anaesthetic or narcotic effects. Unnecessary exposure should be prevented by appropriate work practices and engineering controls, adequate ventilation and by the use of approved personal protective equipment including gloves, clothing and safety goggles and the use of respirators where appropriate to the task being carried out.

Glycol Ether PM offers very high water solubility and active solvency, and is widely used in coating and cleaning applications. It offers better viscosity reduction than heavier molecular weight glycol ethers and is particularly effective in epoxy and high solids acrylic systems.

Methyl PROXITOL is a colourless, hygroscopic solvent with a volatility, viscosity and solvent power similar to those of ethylene oxide-based glycol ethers.

1-METOXY-2-PROPANOL (MP)
Methoxypropanol (also known as monomethyl ether of propylene glycol , 1-metoxy- 2-propanol , PM or PGME ) is a transparent liquid, which is water-soluble and highly flammable.

Method of obtaining:
Methoxypropanol is produced in the reaction of 1,2 -epoxy propane and methanol, in the presence of a catalyst, and then by distillation.

Application
Methoxypropanol is mainly used in producing propylene glycol acetate (also known as PMA), paints, varnishes, printing inks, synthetic resins and rubber cement. It is also used as a cleaning agent in the LCD and electronic industry.

Storage and transport
Methoxypropanol is extremely flammable and must hence be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place away from any ignition sources. For transport purposes, methoxypropanol is classified as ADR class 3.
