KATHON CG is a highly efficacious preservative for rinse-off personal care applications.
KATHON CG is well established, broad-spectrum, and biodegradable.

Kathon CG is a broad-spectrum, rapidly biodegradable preservative.
Offers benefits of KATHON CG including environmentally acceptable, not bioaccumulating and no color or odor imparted to cosmetic products.
KATHON CG is simple water-based formulation for ease of use in manufacture.
Kathon CG is used in rinse-off hair and skin care products like shampoos, conditioners, body wash/ shower gels and liquid hand soaps.

Kathon CG is the trade name for a combination of methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, which offers preservative benefit.
Introduced into cosmetics in the mid-1970s, KATHON CG elicited a great number of sensitizations in consumers.
This led to KATHON CG not being included in cosmetics other than rinse-off products.
KATHON CG is used in many products instead of parabens, despite the fact that parabens have a better safety track record and lower incidence of causing a sensitizing reaction.

What is KATHON CG?
Kathon CG or isothiazolinone is a mixture of two chemicals (Chloro-2-methyl-A-isothiazolin-3-one & 2-methyl-4-isothiaszolin-3-one).
KATHON CG is a widely used preservative in cosmetics and commercial household products.
KATHON CG is also used as an industrial preservative for cutting fluids.

Where is KATHON CG found?
-Creams / Lotions
-Shampoos
-Cleaners
-Washing materials

KathonTM CG is a broad-spectrum preservative for rinse-off personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, liquid soaps, body washes, and shower gels.
KATHON CG also sees use in all-purpose cleaners, floor and furniture polishes & waxes, automotive washes, polishes & waxes, air fresheners, moist sponges, and towelettes.

Kathon CG is an outstanding antimicrobial agent that is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and mold.
The active ingredients in Kathon CG are two isothiazolinones used in combination: methylisothiazolinone (C4H5NOS) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (C4H4ClNOS).
These active ingredients are formulated with inert salts in an aqueous solution.

Due to KATHON CGs broad-spectrum activity, low toxicity at recommended use levels, and excellent chemical compatibility, Kathon CG provides formulators with an economical and environmentally acceptable alternative to other commercial preservatives.
KATHON CG is effective at low concentrations over a wide pH range and is compatible with a variety of surfactants and emulsifiers.
Kathon CG is approved for use worldwide.
KATHON CG does not impart color or odor to cosmetic products, is not bioaccumulating, and is rapidly biodegradable.

Kathon CG, which has a wide area of usage, is one of the representatives of the isothiazolinone group.
Considering the application areas in industrial and cosmetic products, it can be a contaminant to water and soil, and it can be toxic to organisms.
Vermicompost, known as the organic matter of worms, has important features in terms of increasing the production of plant biomass as well as increasing the soil content.
In this study, Kathon CG was applied on the forage pea (Pisum sativum spp. arvence), which is an important food source for humans and animals, and it was treated with liquid vermicompost to reduce the stress caused by the Kathon CG chemical on the plant.
As a first step, the EC50/2, EC50, and EC50 × 2 values of Kathon CG were determined.
These concentrations were applied to the plant, and the biochemical effects (total protein, H₂O₂ and MDA amounts, SOD activity) were examined at the end of 48 and 72 h.
In the second stage of the experiment, the same chemical was applied with the same amount of liquid vermicompost by keeping the conditions constant, and the same biochemical parameters were examined.
The healing properties of vermicompost were compared with and without liquid vermicompost.
When statistical data are compared with the control group, the results revealed a significant difference between these two conditions (p < 0.05).

Physical and Chemical Characteristics of KATHON CG:
Chemical Identification of KATHON CG:
The active ingredients of KATHON CG preservative are two isothiazolinones, identified by the IUPAC system of nomenclature as: 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one

Recommended Use Directions of KATHON CG:
The maximum recommended use level for KATHON CG preservative is 0.1% by weight of product as supplied (15 parts per million active ingredient) in rinse-off products and 0.05% (7.5 parts per million active ingredient) in leave-on products.
Because the components of personal care formulations vary considerably and may have an impact on the effect of preservatives, we urge each manufacturer to confirm the efficacy and stability of KATHON CG in use.

Kathon CG was determined in 156 of the most commonly used cosmetic products in Denmark.
42% of the cosmetic products were found to contain Kathon CG. Kathon CG was present in 48% of “rinse off” and 31% of “leave on” cosmetic products.
The 3:1 ratio of chloromethyl isothiazolinone (CMI): methyl isothiazolinone (MI) in Kathon CG was found to be disturbed in 41% of Kathon CG preserved cosmetic products.
The disturbed CMI/MI ratio was shown in 29% “rinse off” and 73% “leave on” cosmetic products.
KATHON CG is suggested that the chemical reaction of the ketone group of the isothizaolinones with other ingredients in cosmetic products may disturb the CMI/MI ratio of Kathon CG.
The results of the study have been discussed in relation to the use of Kathon CG in cosmetic products as well as test material for allergic reaction.

Kathon CG, a cosmetics preservative containing, as active ingredients, 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, appears to be a frequent cause of contact dermatitis in Europe.
In the United States, where Kathon CG was introduced some 5 years later, the use of this preservative system for cosmetics and toiletries is rapidly increasing.
Undoubtedly cases of contact sensitization will soon emerge in this country.
Most cases of contact allergy are caused by the use of moisturizing creams on (slightly) damaged skin.
Sensitization by the use of cosmetic products on previously healthy skin, especially the face, does occur but appears to be less frequent.
Rinse-off products do not seem to have a substantial potential for the induction and elicitation of contact allergic reactions to Kathon CG because of dilution of the product and the allergen with water as well as a short contact time with the skin.
This review provides a synopsis of current knowledge on the preservative system Kathon CG, with emphasis on the risk of sensitization and diagnostic procedures.

Kathon CG (Cosmetic Grade) is a mixture of methylisothiazolinone (1.125%), methylchloroisothiazolinone (0.375%), magnesium nitrate and magnesium chloride (23%), and water (75%).
Isothiazolinones are heterocyclic compounds used as biocides because of their antimicrobial properties against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and algae.
Kathon CG is used in a wide range of cosmetics and hygiene and personal care products in maximum permissible concentrations of 7.5ppm (stay-on products) and 15ppm (rinse-off products).
KATHON CG is also used in industry, where the concentrations can be higher.
Kathlon CG was included as an allergen in the standard series in the 1980s at a concentration of 100ppm and is still one of the most common allergens in both the workplace and the home.
