CAS-No:    61791-12-6
INCI:    PEG-40 Castor Oil
Chemical nature: Castor Oil 40 EO is a nonionic solubilizer and emulsifier made by reacting castor oil with ethylene oxide in a molar ratio of 1: 40.
Composition: The main component of Castor Oil 40 EO is glycerol polyethylene glycol ricinoleate.
Together with fatty acid esters of polyethylene glycol, this forms the hydrophobic part of the product.
The smaller hydrophylic part consists of free polyethylene glycols and ethoxylated glycerol.
Description: Castor Oil 40 EO is a pale yellow oily liquid that is clear at temperatures above 26 °C. It has a faint but characteristic odor.
Solubility: Castor Oil 40 EO forms clear solutions in water. Castor Oil 40 EO is also soluble in many organic solvents, e.g. ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, toluene and xylene.
In contrast to anionic emulsifying agents, Castor Oil 40 EO becomes less soluble in water at higher temperatures.
Thus, aqueous solutions become turbid at a certain temperature.
Castor Oil 40 EO is miscible with all the other Kolliphor grades and, on heating, also with fatty acids, fatty alcohols and certain animal and vegetable oils.

Nanoemulsions have attracted much attention due to their wide application in commercial industries such as pharmaceutics, food, beverages and skin care.
PEG 40 CASTOR OIL has been extensively used for emulsification, protection and solubilization of various lipophilic bioactive agents.

Nano-emulsions are a class of emulsions covering the size range 20–500 nm.
Due to their small droplet size, several differences in their physicochemical properties and functional behaviors are exhibited in contrast to conventional emulsions: transparent/translucent appearance, long-term stability and high bioavailability.
Unlike microemulsions, which are thermodynamically stable, nano-emulsions are kinetically stable and can be produced at low surfactant levels, which is very important for industrial applications in pharmacy, food, cosmetics, agrochemistry and polymer synthesis
PEG-40 CASTOR OIL can be used to form nano-emulsion.
