CAPRIC ACID
CAPRIC ACID
Capric acid, also called as decanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid with a chain of 10 carbon atoms. Capric acid is a light-yellowish transparent oily liquid with an unpleasant smell.
Capric acid, together with other medium-chain triglycerides, is considered to be an important contributor to good health.
This is most commonly used in the cosmetics and personal care, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.
Capric acid is a short-chain, saturated acid found naturally in palm and coconut oils.
Capric acid is used for a variety of personal care and industrial applications, among others.
Capric acid can be used as a natural antimicrobial ingredient and act as an emulsifier or an emollient in personal care.
Capric acid is also commonly used as an artificial flavor in food, an agent for organic synthesis in manufacturing processes, as well as an ester that facilitates the absorption of certain drugs into fatty tissue.
Capric acid is an extremely versatile product with many uses and applications across a variety of industries. It is used in making dyes, in plasticizers, as a solubilizer in mineral oils and in many other areas, including:
Automotive: Capric acid can be used in the making of lubricating grease and in synthetic rubber.
Fragrance: Capric acid can be made into esters to give fragrance to perfumes.
Food and beverage industry: Capric acid is a natural antimicrobial, making it a great product to use in sanitizers for food processing or preparation facilities, to keep surfaces and equipment clean and contaminant free. Capric acid is also used in the creation of artificial flavorings.
Personal Care: Capric acid has a number of qualities that make it useful for the personal care industry. In addition to its antimicrobial properties, it is an effective emulsifier and emollient.
Capric acid (Decanoic acid) is a saturated fatty acid. Its formula is CH3(CH2)8COOH. Salts and esters of decanoic acid are called decanoates or “caprates”.
The term capric acid is derived from the Latin “caper / capra” (goat) because the sweaty, unpleasant smell of the compound is reminiscent of goats.
Capric acid occurs naturally in coconut oil (about 10%) and palm kernel oil (about 4%), otherwise it is uncommon in typical seed oils. It is found in the milk of various mammals and to a lesser extent in other animal fats. Two other acids are named after goats: caproic (a C6 fatty acid) and caprylic (a C8 fatty acid). Along with decanoic acid, these total 15% in goat milk fat. Decanoic acid can be prepared from oxidation of primary alcohol dacanol by using chromium trioxide (CrO3) oxidant under acidic conditions.
Neutralization of decanoic acid or saponification of its esters, typically triglycerides, with sodium hydroxide will give sodium decanoate. This salt (CH3(CH2)8COO−Na+) is a component of some types of soap. Decanoic acid is used in the manufacture of esters for artificial fruit flavors and perfumes. It is also used as an intermediate in chemical syntheses. It is used in organic synthesis and industrially in the manufacture of perfumes, lubricants, greases, rubber, dyes, plastics, food additives and pharmaceuticals
Capric acid is a member of the series of fatty acids found in oils and animal fats. The names of Caproic, Caprylic, and Capric acids are all derived from the word caper (Latin: ‘goat’). These are colorless light yellowish transparent oily liquids with unconfortable smells. These are used in organic synthesis, manufacture of perfume, medicine, lubricating grease, rubber and dye.
Other Names: 1-Decanoic acid; Capric acid; Caprinic acid; Caprynic acid; Decoic acid; Decylic acid; n-Capric acid; n-Decanoic acid; n-Decoic acid; n-Decylic acid
Capric acid is widespread in plant oils and as glycerides in seed oilsand is also present in apple, apricot, banana, morello cherry, citrus fruits, cheese, butter, white wine, Japanese whiskey, peated malt, wort and scallops. It is used as a defoamer, lubricant and citrus fruit coating. Salts (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al) used as binders, emulsifiers and anticaking agents in food manuf. Capric acid is a fatty acid C10H20O2 found in fats and oils and used in flavors and perfumes
Capric acid, also known as Decanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid naturally found in animal fats, milk of goats and cows, and plant oils such as palm and coconut oil. Capric acid is used in the manufacturing of esters for artificial flavoring, color, and aroma. Moreover, it is used in the production of personal care products, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubbers, dyes, lubricating grease, and plastics products. It is a vital part of the delivery system that helps the diabetics absorb prescribed amounts of insulin. The world capric acid market is expected to witness dynamic growth, owing to the large number of end users and increasing industry applications.
Factors such as progressive demographic changes and consumer awareness regarding personal care have boosted the capric acid market.
Moreover, increasing consumption of processed and packaged food products has fostered the demand for new artificial flavoring and coloring agents. However, the exposure in its refined form leading to skin or pulmonary irritation and irregular availability of raw materials are the major factors restricting the market growth. The prominent pharmaceutical companies intend to use the capric acid present in coconut oil to manufacture drugs for diabetic patients, which boosts the growth of the market.
Capric acid occurs naturally in coconut oil (about 10%) and palm kernel oil (about 4%), otherwise it is uncommon in typical seed oils.
It is found in the milk of various mammals and to a lesser extent in other animal fats.
It also comprises 1.62% of the fats from the fruit of the durian species Durio graveolens.
Two other acids are named after goats: caproic acid (a C6:0 fatty acid) and caprylic acid (a C8:0 fatty acid).
Along with capric acid, these total 15% in goat milk fat.
Production
Capric acid can be prepared from oxidation of the primary alcohol decanol by using chromium trioxide (CrO3) oxidant under acidic conditions.
Neutralization of capric acid or saponification of its triglyceride esters with sodium hydroxide yields sodium caprate, CH3(CH2)8CO2−Na+.
This salt is a component of some types of soap.
Uses
Capric acid is used in the manufacture of esters for artificial fruit flavors and perfumes. It is also used as an intermediate in chemical syntheses.
It is used in organic synthesis and industrially in the manufacture of perfumes, lubricants, greases, rubber, dyes, plastics, food additives and pharmaceuticals.[8]
Pharmaceuticals
Caprate ester prodrugs of various pharmaceuticals are available.
Capric acid is a fatty acid
Forming a salt or ester of Capric acid with a drug will increase its lipophilicity and its affinity for adipose tissue.
Since distribution of a drug from fatty tissue is usually slow, one may develop a long-acting injectable form of a drug (called a depot injection) by using its caprate form.
Some examples of drugs available as a caprate ester include nandrolone, fluphenazine, bromperidol, and haloperidol.[citation needed]
Effects
Capric acid acts as a non-competitive AMPA receptor antagonist at therapeutically relevant concentrations, in a voltage- and subunit-dependent manner, and this is sufficient to explain its antiseizure effects.[14] This direct inhibition of excitatory neurotransmission by capric acid in the brain contributes to the anticonvulsant effect of the MCT ketogenic diet.[14] Decanoic acid and the AMPA receptor antagonist drug perampanel act at separate sites on the AMPA receptor, and so it is possible that they have a cooperative effect at the AMPA receptor, suggesting that perampanel and the ketogenic diet could be synergistic.[14]
Capric acid may be responsible for the mitochondrial proliferation associated with the ketogenic diet, and that this may occur via PPARγ receptor agonism and its target genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis.[15][16] Complex I activity of the electron transport chain is substantially elevated by decanoic acid treatment.[15]
It should however be noted that orally ingested medium chain fatty acids would be very rapidly degraded by first-pass metabolism by being taken up in the liver via the portal vein, and are quickly metabolized via coenzyme A intermediates through β-oxidation and the citric acid cycle to produce carbon dioxide, acetate and ketone bodies.[17] Whether the ketones β-hydroxybutryate and acetone have direct antiseizure activity is unclear.[14][18][19][20]
Capric acid, also known as decanoic acid or decylic acid, is a saturated fatty acid. Its formula is CH3(CH2)8COOH.
Salts and esters of decanoic acid are called caprates or decanoates.
The term capric acid is derived from the Latin “caper / capra” (goat) because the sweaty, unpleasant smell of the compound is reminiscent of goats.
Capric acid, also known as decanoate or 10:0, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as medium-chain fatty acids.
Capric acid is used in perfumes, resins, lubricants, greases, dyes, plastics, pharmaceuticals and food additives.
Capric acid is involved in the preparation of wetting agents and sodium deconate, which is an active component in soap.
Capric acid is also used as a plasticizer and as an absorption enhancer in guinea pig skin experiments. Further, it is employed in the generation of esters for artificial fruit flavors. In addition to this, it is used in agricultural chemicals, lubricant additives and surface active agents.
Notes
Incompatible with bases, reducing agents and oxidizing agents.
Capric acid (decanoic acid) is a medium-chain fatty acid found in saturated fats (cow butter, and plant oils like coconut oil).
Capric acid is a major constituent of the MCT ketogenic diet, providing about 40% of the medium chain fat within the diet.
The acid is discussed to have positive effect on seizure control through direct AMPA receptor inhibition and on mitochondrial diseases through the binding to PPARgamma.
It readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, probably by a combination of diffusion and saturable carrier-mediated transport via a medium-chain fatty acid transporter.
Increasing consumption of the processed and packaged food products has fostered the demand for new artificial flavoring and coloring agents.
Capric acid is used for producing esters for color, artificial flavoring, and aroma.
Capric acid acts as an antimicrobial agent and is therefore, used in commercial food handling.
Capric acid is widely used in wineries, breweries, and meat processing industries.
The growth of the food & beverage industry is expected to drive the market for capric acid.
New sources of raw materials can provide a lucrative opportunity for the capric acid market.
The use of decanoate ester, a derivative of capric acid, in various injectable drugs will further boost capric acid usage in the pharmaceutical Industry.
Prominent pharmaceutical companies intend to use the capric acid found in coconut oil to manufacture drugs for diabetic patients, which is a major opportunity for the capric acid market.

Carboxylic acids is a homologous series in which the compounds contain a functional group called the carboxyl group (- COOH).
The general molecular formula for carboxylic acids is CnH2n+1COOH.
Carboxylic acids contain at least one carboxyl group.
Carboxylic acids with two or more carboxyl groups attached are called dicarborxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids, etc.
Carboxylic acids are derivatives of hydrocarbons in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in the hydrocarbon have been replaced by a carboxyl group.
The first four carboxylic acids derived from alkanes are methanoic acid (HCOOH), ethanoic acid (CH3COOH), propanoic acid (C2H5COOH) and butanoic acid (C3H7COOH).
The next few carboxylic acids are as follow: pentanoic acid (C4H9COOH) hexanoic acid (C5H11COOH) heptanoic acid (C6H13COOH) octanoic acid (C7H15COOH) nonanoic acid (C8H17COOH) decanoic acid (C9H19COOH)

Why Use Capric or Caprylic Acids?
Manufacturers use capric and caprylic acids to produce a variety of consumer products, such as beauty, food, pharmaceutical, and personal care items. These compounds perform several essential functions, including serving as:
Barrier layers in dyes, lubricants, and grease products
Intermediates in the production of Esters, or chemical compounds with a hydroxyl group replaced by an alkoxy group, for perfume and artificial flavors
Solvents for topical pharmaceuticals such as creams and ointments
Stabilizers for emulsions
Thinning agents for beauty products
While there are similarities between capric acid and caprylic acid (for example, both exhibit anti-microbial properties), each compound also demonstrates specific properties that make it a better choice in certain applications.
Capric acid has the advantage of being a better emollient and emulsifier.
These qualities lead many manufacturers to use capric acid when making sanitizers and producing esters for rubber and plastic.
Caprylic acid demonstrates superior anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties, which make it ideal for use in food, cleaners, and medicine.
Manufacturers also use capric acid as an activator or accelerant in rubber production.

Both capric acid (decanoic acid, C10:0) and lauric acid (dodecanoic acid, C12:0) have been shown to be powerful bactericidal agents in vitro.
Capric acid exhibits antibacterial activity against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, anti-fungal and antiviral activity.
Nakatsuji et al.reported that lauric acid exhibited significant antimicrobial and antiinflammatory activities against P. acnes.
Although the anti-P. acnes properties of lauric acid are well-documented, the mechanism of action has not been completely elucidated.
In the preliminary studies, we investigated whether capric acid could suppress P. acnes-induced IL-8 production by THP-1 cells.
The results showed that capric acid, at a concentration of 100 mM, significantly reduced IL-8 release by P. acnes-stimulated THP-1 cell.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of capric acid and lauric acid, and then investigate their mechanism of anti-inflammatory action in a cellular model, in order to better understand the possible anti-acne potential of capric acid.
