Sodium tetraborate decahydrate also known as Borax, sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate is a naturally occurring compound.
Borax Decahydrate is mostly used as a cleaning aid especially for laundry (softening the water). 
As a cleaning aid, borax is also used as dishwasher detergent, as floor and wall cleaner, and to clean outdoor furniture, toilet, porcelain sinks, stains from stainless steel. 
Borax can be used for parasite control to keep ants, water bugs, and cockroaches away and help dogs with mange and people with a variety of parasite problems including lice and mites. 
Due to Borax Decahydrates alkalinity and antifungal properties, Borax is used in hair care products to heal chronic and embarrassing scalp conditions.

Borax Decahydrate is an important multifunctional source of B2O3 (e.g. frits), particularly for processes in which the simultaneous presence of sodium is beneficial.
Borax is available in large crystal, powder, and granular form, the latter being the most practical for ceramic use.

Actually, this phenomena can be used to advantage to make self glazing products like Egyptian Paste and Borax Decahydrate can produce a hardened surface in non-fired products. 
In addition, the migration issue during drying can be tolerated in some circumstances, borax can be employed in a traditional ceramic slip or glaze blend as a low-cost super-flux to produce a glaze or slip for low temperatures.
Borax has many technical, granular and powder grades of this material.

Borax Decahydrate is also produced at the Bandirma Borax Plant in Turkey.

Chemical and physical properties
Stability
Borax decahydrate is chemically stable under normal storage conditions.
Borax decahydrate has a slight water vapor pressure which increases with warmer temperatures. 
This can cause crystallization at particle contact points, resulting in caking. Borax decahydrate will slowly lose water of crystallization if exposed to a warm, dry atmosphere. 
Conversely exposure to a humid atmosphere causes caking. 
When storing the product, care should therefore be taken to avoid wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and to ensure that the packaging is not damaged.

Buffering action
Dissolved in water, borax decahydrate hydrolyzes to give a mildly alkaline solution. 
Borax Decahydrate is thus capable of neutralizing acids. 
Borax Decahydrate also combines with strong alkalis to form compounds of lower pH. 
The relatively constant pH of borax decahydrate solutions makes Borax Decahydrate an excellent buffering agent.

The mode of action for Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate and what makes Borax Decahydrate so effective in pest control is Borax Decahydrates ability to kill insects without using toxic chemicals that could be dangerous for the applicator to inhale or ingest.

In the USA, brine from salt lakes is also an important source of sodium borate.

Drawbacks of Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate
Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate on Borax Decahydrates own is not attractive or something that will lure insects to the active ingredient, so if the target pest doesn’t come near Borax Decahydrate, Borax Decahydrate won’t do and killing and can be rather ineffective. 
That is why you need to apply the active ingredient where the pests frequent so they will have no choice but to encounter Borax Decahydrate either by crawling over the product or curiously eating and ingesting Borax Decahydrate as they forage. 
That being said, the active ingredient is sometimes used in bait products that contain other ingredients that can serve as attractants.
Do not use Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate when treating insects that have piercing mouthparts or feed on plant juices or blood (like bed bugs, mites, lice, aphids) as they will not be interested in ingesting Borax.

Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate or Borax is not a product that will produce immediate eliminate of the target pest, you will have to be patient if you choose this method of control. 
Borax Decahydrate could take a few days for after the target insect ingests the active ingredient to succumb to the effects of this slow-killing active ingredient, between 48 to 72 hours. 
For Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate that comes in dust form, you should use a handheld pesticide duster to get a more precise application where the pests are hiding.
In most cases, using Borax alone may not be enough to control a heavy insect infestation and should be used alongside other insecticide products so if one active ingredient or treatment method doesn’t succeed in killing the insects, the other one will.

Pharmaceutical Applications
Sodium borate is used in pharmaceutical applications similarly to boric acid (see Boric Acid). 
Borax Decahydrate has been used externally as a mild astringent and as an emulsifying agent in creams. 
Borax Decahydrate has also been used in lozenges, mouthwashes, otic preparations (0.3% w/v), and ophthalmic solutions (0.03–1.0% w/v). 
Sodium borate has additionally been investigated in the prevention of crystal formation in freeze-dried solutions.
Preparations of sodium borate in honey have historically been used as paints for the throat, tongue, and mouth, but such use is now inadvisable because of concerns about toxicity in such applications. 
Sodium borate is also used in cosmetics such as moisturizers, deodorants, and shampoos.

Agricultural Uses
Borate is a salt of boric acid (H3BO3). 
There are two known types of borates – orthoborate and metaborate which are used as fertilizers. 
Besides these, polyborates, boric acid, calcium polyborate (colemanite), sodium tetraborate, solubor and complex borosilicate (boron frits) are also used as fertilizers to reduce boron deficiency. 
Borate minerals like kernite and tincal are the main sources of borax.

Borax Decahydrate is used to make buffer solutions in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, as an anti-fungal compound, in the manufacture of fiberglass, as a flux in metallurgy, neutron-capture shields for radioactive sources, a texturing agent in cooking, as a cross-linking agent in Slime, as an alkali in photographic developers, as a precursor for other boron compounds, and along with its inverse, boric acid, is useful as an insecticide.
In artisanal gold mining, borax is sometimes used as part of a process (as a flux) meant to eliminate the need for toxic mercury in the gold extraction process, although it cannot directly replace mercury. 
Borax was reportedly used by gold miners in parts of the Philippines in the 1900s.

Boric acid is a weak acid (pKa = 9.15), existing in aqueous solutions at or below pH 7 as undissociated boric acid.

Sodium metaborate is much higher in solubility and alkalinity than the other borates. 
Sodium metaborate solutions range in pH from 10.5 to 12, while borax solutions typically have a pH of about 9.24.
