Hydroxyaluminum distearate Preparation Products And Raw materials
Raw materials: Aluminium potassium sulfate dodecahydrate, Stearic acid, Sodium hydroxide, Aluminum sulfate

There are multiple types of aluminum stearates, generally classified as aluminum mono-, di-, and tri-stearate.
They vary in terms of physical properties such as melting point, free fatty acids, and particularly the gelling properties.

Oils with a low viscosity are best thickened by aluminum di- and tri-stearate, whilst very viscous oils from stiffer gel when combined with aluminum mono- or di-stearates.

All aluminum stearates are highly hydrophobic, and feature outstanding transparency and excellent adhesion to metal surfaces.
Due to their water repellency, aluminum di- and tri-stearate are used as hydrophobic agents in the building industry.

Aluminium distearate (also aluminum distearate, aluminium stearate base) is made of oleate and non-toxicity surfactants, which can be used primarily as an effective defoamer in water-based drilling mud systems.
Aluminium distearate is a water insoluble defoamer and can reduce surface tension.
Bichain is a reliable and professional anti-foaming agent manufacturer of aluminum distearate and aluminium distearate as mud defoamers in oilwell drilling mud and hydraulic fracturing.
Molecular formula: C36H71ALO5
CAS NO.: 300-92-5

Advantage:
♦Strong defoaming ability
♦Durable defoaming effectiveness
♦Easy to use and quick in effect
♦Broad spectrum in water based drilling muds

Aluminum soaps have different and widespread applications (1-4), aluminum stearates being among them especially important.
Aluminum tristearate is useful in paints and enamels and in the flatting of varnishes.
It also prevents bleeding and oil separation in putty.

Aluminum distearate is the most commonly used grade of aluminum stearate.
It is used as a thickener in paints, inks and greases; a water repellent for leather and rope; and a lubricant in plastics and rope.
It is also used in cement production for waterproofing and air entrainment, and in hot-melt paper coating compounds.
Because of its unusually heavy bodying properties, aluminum monostearate is used in the manufacture of paints, inks, greases, and waxes.
In recent years, hydrophobic aluminum monostearate was tested as a low-solubility denitrification substrate for anaerobic bacteria and a source of aluminum for phosphate precipitation.
Aluminum stearate has potential for use in a flow-through container for denitrification of oxidized effluent from home sewage systems.
It was also referred that the preheated mixture of metal soaps, along with the costabilizer, delayed the fast blackening of the polymer, but mainly showed a reduction in the rate of dehydrochlorination, which subsequently produced a less black material.

Stearic acid saponification conditions are very important for the process of obtaining mono-, di- and tristearate aluminum soaps.
For this process is also important the amount of applied alkali, i.e. molar ratio of the acid and alkali.
In the saponification reaction CH3(CH2)16COOH + n NaOH  CH3(CH2)16COONa + H2O + (n-1) NaOH n influences the equilibrium.
When n value is higher, the reaction equilibrium is shifted to the right and a smaller amount of free stearic acid remains as unreacted in the soap.
Manufacture of mono-, di- and tristearate aluminum soaps is mainly empirical.
Important preparation parameters are the amount of NaOH for saponification, temperature of saponification and precipitation, mixing speed, precipitation speed, etc.
In this study, aluminum stearate precipitation was carried out with different molar ratio of reactants.
The objective was to investigate optimal ratio of reactants and characterize the obtained soaps

Aluminum stearate is manufactured commercially by reacting a water solution of the sodium soap of a commercial fatty acid with a solution of an aluminum salt, generally the sulfate.
The resulting slurry of insoluble aluminum stearate is filtered, washed, dried, and ground to uniform particle size.

In general, stearates with aluminum to fatty acid ratios corresponding to the distearate have proved most effective in the preparation of lubricating greases.
Ordinarily, these aluminum soaps are added to hydrocarbon mineral oils in the ratio of about 4% to 12% or more of the soap to 96% to 88% hydrocarbon oil, respectively.
Hydrocarbon lubricating oils having Saybolt ‘viscosities within the range of 100-120 seconds at 210 F are frequently used.
The grease is compounded by heating the mixture of oil and aluminum soap until maximum dispersion of the soap in the oil is obtained.
The grease is then cooled under controlled conditions during which the optimum gel structure is built up in the grease.

We have found that the gel-forming power of aluminum distearate, as defined above, in hydrocarbon oils, can be greatly improved by forming aluminum distearate anhydride therein.
Our present invention is directed, therefore, to aluminum distearate anhydride, to grease grade aluminum distearate containingsubstantial quantities (i. e., 1% by weight or more) of aluminum distearate anhydride therein, and to methods for the production of these improved products.

The aluminum distearate anhydrides of this invention are characterized by the substantial absence of chemically combined water and are not to be confused with the dehydrated soaps of the prior art in which only physically present water has been removed.

The aluminum distearate anhydrides, as defined above, are prepared by the dehydration of the corresponding aluminum distearates.
This dehydration, we have found, can be effected by heating the previously dried aluminum distearate with agitation at temperatures of 160-180″ C or higher for a length of time suflicient to remove all of the chemically combined water, and thus to produce the anhydride.
The aluminum distearate anhydrides so obtained are white solids that are soluble or dispersible in aliphatic hydrocarbons such as kerosene, lubricating oils and the like.

We have also found, however, as another important feature of our invention, that an increase in the gelforming power of aluminum distearates is obtainable by only partial conversion thereof to aluminum distearate anhydride.
The advantage of this discovery is, of course, that considerably less drastic heating conditions are required to effect the partial dehydration.
Thus, for example, we have found that substantial quantities of aluminum distearate anhydride, ranging from 1% to about 15-25%, can be formed by heating aluminum distearate under dehydrating conditions for a suitable time, usually within about 1-5 hours, at a temperature of at least 160 0, when stagnant heating conditions are used.
We have also found, however, that the same degree of dehydration can be effected at much lower temperatures, which may be as low as C., if the aluminum distearate is heated in a current of drying gas such as hot air or hot products of combustion.

Any suitable type of equipment may be used to carry out the process of our invention.
Where stagnant heating is employed, i. e., where the aluminum distearate is simply heated with agitation to drive out water, an indirect-fired kiln or a jacketed kettle provided with internal agitation may be used.
When a current of hot air or other drying gas is employed, we prefer to use a belt dryer or a tray dryer in which a current of the drying gas is passed continuously over the aluminum distearate in finely divided form.
Other similar equipment will readily suggest itself to those experienced in the art of drying solids, and may be employed.

Commercial aluminum soaps are generally produced by treating alkali soaps with water-soluble aluminum salts.
In precipitation in aqueous systems, agglomerates of aluminum hydroxide and carboxylic acids are first produced which then react with each other to form salts during the subsequent drying process.

Aluminum  DiStearate  is  aluminum  salt of stearic acid, also called aluminum stearate.
It is an effective defoamer for many types of water based mud systems.
It enhances the breakout of gas and air bubbles, minimizing the foaming tendency of the drilling fluid.

Product Advantages
·Highly effective defoamer for virtually all types of water based mud
·Effective at low concentrations
·Easily prepared and added with materials available at the rig site
·Minimal effect on rheology of water based mud

Recommended Treatment
It can be mixed with diesel or mineral oil at the rate of 5 to 10 lbs per 5 gallons of oil and then added by spraying small amounts on top of the mud pit where foaming is evident.
It can also be added directly as a powder by shaking small amounts over the mud pit foam.
