What Is Octocrylene?
Octocrylene is an ingredient used in sunscreens for its ability to absorb UV rays, protecting the skin from sun damage.
Octocrylene is a thick colorless ingredient; it is very chemically stable and can be used as an additive to cosmetics to preserve any natural chemical degradation that can occur when skincare products are exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.

Octocrylene is classed as a chemical sunscreen due to this ability to protect the skin from UV damage.
Octocrylene is different from your physical based sunscreens such as; zinc or titanium dioxide which work to protect the skin by creating a physical barrier.
Octocrylene is also thought to have skin-moisturizing effects because of its emollient properties. Emollients help to prevent moisture loss from the top layers of the skin.
However, it’s important to remember that the primary purpose of this ingredient is to neutralize UV radiation, and any emollient properties are just an added benefit.
If you’re looking to moisturize the skin specifically, octocrylene should not be the first ingredient on your list.
Octocrylene is often used in formulations for products such as; hair sprays, tanning oils, BB creams, conditioners, and CC creams.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has evaluated the safety of octocrylene in its use in sunscreen products and found it to be safe for concentrations up to 10%.
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, a group that reviews the safety of skincare and personal care products, has deferred its review of octocrylene due to the extensive safety assessment conducted by the FDA.
Octocrylene is also considered safe for use in concentrations up to 10% under EU Cosmetic Regulation.
The EU is often considered to be stricter in their approval of ingredients.

Octocrylene effectively absorbs UV rays to protect the skin from the damage caused by the sun.

It’s a chemical sunscreen ingredient, used not only for its own ability to protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays but also for its ability to increase further the stability and efficacy of other chemical sunscreen ingredients, hence its popularity and prevalence

Similar to oxybenzone and octinoxate, octocrylene is another UV filter that is absorbed into the skin to help offer sun protection.

Octocrylene is also considered safe for a combined use of sunscreen cream/lotion, sunscreen pump spray, face cream, hand cream and lipstick at a concentration up to 10%.
However, the use of Octocrylene at 10% or above in sunscreen propellant spray is not considered safe for the combined use

Octocrylene protects the skin from the harmful effects of the sun and premature skin aging. Octocrylene helps prevent the risk of skin cancer.
This filter mainly absorbs UVB rays, and shorter UVA rays, which are responsible for aging but also for skin cancer.
Octocrylene remains stable and therefore effective during exposure to the sun. Octocrylene stabilises avobenzone, a particularly effective filter against long UVA rays, enabling it to be used.
Octocrylene enables sunscreen products to be water resistant.

here are two categories of sunscreens on the market, physical, and chemical. Octocrylene falls into the chemical-based sunscreen category.
However, it is essential to understand the difference when determining which product is for you.

Physical sunscreens
Physical sunscreens work by reflecting the UV rays from the sun, protecting the skin from the harmful rays.
These formulations rely on the use of ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to provide this protection.
Physical sunscreens create a barrier between the skin and the sun and aren’t absorbed into the skin.
They are generally broad-spectrum, meaning that they protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Chemical sunscreens
Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and absorb the skin’s harmful rays before they can penetrate deep enough to cause damage to the skin.
Often chemical sunscreens are used in combination with another chemical sunscreen to provide broad-spectrum protection.
In the case of octocrylene, it is commonly used in conjunction with avobenzone.
Also, both types of sunscreens, physical and chemical, will often include ingredients such as vitamin C or E to protect against damage from free radicals.
Free radicals damage is more likely to occur with chemical sunscreens than with physical sunscreens, so these ingredients are important to look for in your sunscreen product.

Octocrylene is a chemical sunscreen ingredient that, once absorbed into the skin, captures harmful UV rays before they can cause damage to the underlying skin cells.

An oil-soluble chemical sunscreen agent that protects skin in the UVB and somewhat in the UVA II range with a peak absorption of 304 nm.
Octocrylene is quite photostable (loses 10% of SPF protection in 95 mins) and is often used to stabilize other photo-unstable UV-filters, for example, Avobenzone.
Octocrylene is also often used to improve the water resistance of the products.

Sunscreens are generally split up into two categories.
Physical formulas rely on minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting rays.
The other category relies on chemicals (octocrylene being just one of several) that work once they’re absorbed into the skin.

Benefits of Octocrylene for Skin
While certain chemical sunscreen actives only guard against one type of UV ray, octocrylene offers protection against both longer UVA rays (those responsible for signs of aging) and shorter UVB rays (those responsible for burning).

Octocrylene is unique among its counterparts in its ability to ensure the stability and efficacy of other chemical sunscreen ingredients, avobenzone in particular.
It doesn’t break down or change its molecular structure in the presence of UV light, as some other sunscreen ingredients do

Octocrylene can also help improve the water-resistance of a sunscreen

Octocrylene is an organic compound used as an ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics.
It is an ester formed by the reaction of 3,3-diphenylcyanoacrylate with 2-ethylhexanol. It is a viscous, oily liquid that is clear and colorless.

The extended conjugation of the acrylate portion of the molecule absorbs UVB and short-wave UVA (ultraviolet) rays with wavelengths from 280 to 320 nm, protecting the skin from direct DNA damage.
The ethylhexanol portion is a fatty alcohol, adding emollient and oil-like (water resistant) properties.

Safety
Octocrylene can penetrate into the skin where it acts as a photosensitizer, resulting in an increased production of free radicals under illumination.
It may also pass through the skin, into the blood stream, eventually being metabolized and excreted in urine in form of its metabolites.
Octocrylene can convert to benzophenone through a retro-aldol condensation.
The reaction occurs slowly over time, yielding significant concentration of benzophenone in all commercial cosmetics tested formulated with octocrylene.

In coral, octocrylene has been shown to accumulate in the form of fatty acid conjugates and trigger mitochondrial dysfunction

Benzophenone is a mutagen, carcinogen, and endocrine disruptor.
Its presence in food products or food packaging is banned in the United States.
Under California Proposition 65, there is no safe harbor for benzophenone in any personal care products, including sunscreens, anti-aging creams, and moisturizers

Octocrylene or octocrilene is an organic ultraviolet (UV) filter which absorbs mainly UVB radiation and short UVA wavelengths.
It is used in various cosmetic products to either provide an appropriate sun protection factor in sunscreen products or to protect cosmetic formulations from UV radiation.
There is no discussion that UV filters are beneficial ingredients in cosmetics since they protect from skin cancer, but octocrylene has been recently incriminated to potentially induce adverse effects on the endocrine system in addition to having allergic and/or photoallergic potential.
However, the substance has the advantage to work synergistically with other filters allowing a beneficial broad photoprotection, e.g. it stabilizes the UVA filter avobenzone (i.e. butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane). Like all chemicals used in cosmetics, the safety profile of octocrylene is constantly under assessment by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) since it has been registered according to the European regulation Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.
Summaries of safety data of octocrylene are publicly available on the ECHA website.
This review aims to present the main safety data from the ECHA website, as well as those reported in scientific articles from peer-reviewed journals.
The available data show that octocrylene does not have any endocrine disruption potential.
It is a rare sensitizer, photocontact allergy is more frequent and it is considered consecutive to photosensitization to ketoprofen.
Based on these results, octocrylene can be considered as safe when used as a UV filter in cosmetic products at a concentration up to 10%.

Introduction
Octocrylene or octocrilene (CAS n. 6197‐30‐4) is an organic compound with an aromatic structure which is also known as 2‐ethylhexyl 2‐cyano‐3,3‐diphenyl‐2‐propenoate; 2‐ethylhexyl 2‐cyano‐3,3‐diphenylacrylate or the 2‐ethylhexyl ester of 2‐cyano‐3,3‐diphenyl acrylic acid.

It is an organic ultraviolet (UV) filter, which absorbs mainly UVB radiation and short UVA wavelengths.
Due to its UV radiation absorption properties, it is used in sunscreens with other UV filters to provide an adequate sun protection factor (SPF).
It is also used to stabilize other UV filters such as avobenzone, a filter particularly effective against UVA2; this association thus provides an optimal UV protection.
Various cosmetic products such as facial creams or lip care products contain octocrylene to either provide an adequate SPF or to protect the cosmetic formulation from UV radiation.

In Europe, UV filters allowed in cosmetic products are regulated in Annex VI of Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
According to this regulation, octocrylene is authorized as a UV filter in cosmetic formulations at a maximum concentration of 10.0% as acid form in Europe (Annex VI/10). Of note, octocrylene is also authorized as a UV filter in sunscreen products in the same conditions in the USA.

On the basis of safety assessment, and considering the concerns related to potential endocrine disrupting properties of Octocrylene, the SCCS is of the opinion that Octocrylene is safe as a UV-filter at concentrations up to 10% in cosmetic products when used individually.

The use of Octocrylene in sunscreen propellant spray is considered safe when its concentration does not exceed 9% when used together with face cream, hand cream, and lipstick containing 10% Octocrylene.

Globally-approved sunscreen agent that protects skin from the UVB range of sunlight. It also helps stabilize the UVA sunscreen active, avobenzone. Like all synthetic sunscreen actives, octocrylene can be sensitizing for some people.

This sunscreen active is one of several currently undergoing further safety testing under the purview of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This testing is to gain a better understanding of the systemic absorption, metabolism, and elimination of these sunscreen actives when small amounts enter the body via topical use. It’s important to know that the presence of this or other sunscreen actives in the body does not mean your health is at risk. It is anticipated that the additional testing being done will reaffirm the safety of these ingredients; however, those who remain concerned can choose sunscreens with mineral actives (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) which are not included in the FDA’s new call for additional testing.

Octocrylene is an ester of diphenylcyanoacrylate and 2-ethylhexanol formed by condensation process.
The organic compound is a colorless, oily and viscous liquid. Octocrylene is primarily used in the sunscreens owing to its skin moisturizing properties.
Octocrylene can neutralize UV radiation emitted by sun and minimizes skin damage caused by prolonged sun exposure.
The compound is approved by various regulatory organizations across the globe; however its concentration is limited to 10-12% in any formulation.
It is not used to protect face and arms. It is widely used in the products such as BB cream, CC cream, hair spray, conditioner and tannin oil.

ealth Risks From Octocrylene

All non-mineral sunscreen ingredients such as octocrylene are readily absorbed through the skin and could be detected in the bodies at levels that could cause harm. When octocrylene chemical is exposed to UV light, it absorbs the rays and produces oxygen radicals that can damage cells and cause mutations. It is readily absorbed by the skin and may accumulate within the body in measurable amounts. Upon illumination, the compound induces the production of free radicals. Free radicals are inducers of DNA damage and can lead to cancer. In addition, octocrylene can be toxic to the environment. These health risks attached to octocrylene may restrain its market growth during the forecast period.
