Also referred to as 1-propyl alcohol or 1-propanol, n-propanol is an alcohol resulting from fermentation processes, and sees the majority of its use in producing resins and cellulose esters for the pharmaceutical industry.
Since it reacts in the typical manner associated with primary alcohols, N-propanaol is easily converted into alkyl halides such n-propyl iodide and red phosphorus.
The primary method of industrial preparation is the catalytic hydrogenation of propionaldehyde, typically using cobalt octacarbonyl or rhodium complex to initialize catalyzation.
N-propanaol also possesses a very high octane number, and it has some use in high end racing engines as a fuel source; however, the high cost of production generally inhibits further development of n-propanol as a fuel.
Universal precautions should always be employed when handling or using n-propanol, mainly due to the fact that the fumes have an effect similar to ethanol with three times the potency. Refer to data safety sheet for exposure guidelines.

1-Propanol shows the normal reactions of a primary alcohol.
Thus it can be converted to alkyl halides; for example red phosphorus and iodine produce n-propyl iodide in 80% yield, while PCl3 with catalytic ZnCl2 gives n-propyl chloride.
Reaction with acetic acid in the presence of an H2SO4 catalyst under Fischer esterification conditions gives propyl acetate, while refluxing propanol overnight with formic acid alone can produce propyl formate in 65% yield.
Oxidation of 1-propanol with Na2Cr2O7 and H2SO4 gives only a 36% yield of propionaldehyde, and therefore for this type of reaction higher yielding methods using PCC or the Swern oxidation are recommended.
Oxidation with chromic acid yields propionic acid.

1-Propanol is manufactured by catalytic hydrogenation of propionaldehyde. Propionaldehyde is produced via the oxo process by hydroformylation of ethylene using carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as cobalt octacarbonyl or a rhodium complex.[5]

A traditional laboratory preparation of 1-propanol involves treating n-propyl iodide with moist Ag2O.

Safety
1-Propanol is thought to be similar to ethanol in its effects on the human body, but 2–4 times more potent. Oral LD50 in rats is 1870 mg/kg (compared to 7060 mg/kg for ethanol). It is metabolized into propionic acid. Effects include alcoholic intoxication and high anion gap metabolic acidosis. As of 2011, only one case of lethal 1-propanol poisoning was reported.[6]

Propanol as fuel
1-propanol has high octane number and is suitable for engine fuel usage. However, propanol is too expensive to use as a motor fuel. The research octane number (RON) of propanol is 118, and anti-knock index (AKI) is 108.[7]

Propan-1-ol is the parent member of the class of propan-1-ols that is propane in which a hydrogen of one of the methyl groups is replaced by a hydroxy group.

What is N-Propanol?
N-propanol (also known as 1-propanol, n-propanol alcohol, propan-1-ol, propyl alcohol) is a primary alcohol in which the OH entity is bonded to a primary carbon atom. N-propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH) is one of two isomers of propanol (C3H8O); the other is 2-propanol ((CH3)2CHOH). It is a clear, colourless transparent liquid that has a typical sharp musty odour that is comparable with the smell of rubbing alcohol.

Miscible in water and freely miscible with all common solvents such as glycols, ketones, alcohols, aldehydes, ethers and aliphatic hydrocarbons, 1-propanol is primarily used as a solvent in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, coatings and as a chemical intermediate.

N-propanol forms naturally during fermentation processes. The human gastrointestinal microbiota can also produce small amounts.

Normal propanol is manufactured by a catalytic hydrogenation of propionaldehyde.  The propionaldehyde is itself produced via the oxo process, by hydroformylation of ethylene using carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst such as cobalt octacarbonyl or a rhodium complex.

Hydrogenation is the process of adding pairs of hydrogen atoms to unsaturated compounds, with the aim of saturating these compounds.

N-propanol has an NFPA health rating of 1, causing irritation to your eyes, nose, and throat. High exposure can cause burning, nausea, headaches, and dizziness. Vapours of n-propanol are heavier than air and can also irritate and burn. It has a flammability rating of 3, demonstrating that it can be easily ignited under most ambient temperatures. An instability rating of 0 indicates that n-propanol will remain stable, even when under fire conditions.

N-propanol sits in the alcohol and polyol reactive groups. It reacts with alkali metal, nitrides, oxoacids and carboxylic acids. It is not reactive with strong oxidising agents.

It reacts the same way as primary alcohols. It can be converted to alkyl halides (red phosphorus, iodine), acetic acid to give propyl acetate and chromic acids to give propionic acid.

Storage & Distribution
N-propanol alcohol is typically bulk stored within a petrochemical storage facility for regulation. Storage is normally in a cool, dry and well ventilated facility away from oxidising agents. It should be kept out of direct sunlight, heat, and open flames. It can be stored in drummed containers such as iso tanks made of stainless steel, aluminium or carbon steel.

N-propanol alcohol is exported in bulk vessels or tank trucks. For transportation purposes, it is classed as a flammable liquid with a fire hazard rating of 2.
A full bulk chemical distributor would export the solvent throughout regions such as the UK, Europe, Africa, and America. It belongs to packing group 2.

Safety & Procedures
Personal protective equipment should be worn to prevent contact with the skin, eyes, nose and mouth, including respirators, safety glasses/goggles, gloves and contact lenses. If contact is made with the skin, immediately wash the contaminated area and clothing should be removed.

Immediately wash the eyes with large amounts of water and seek medical attention immediately. Seek fresh air if large amounts of n-propanol have been inhaled.

Industry Uses
1-propanol is used as a solvent in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, polishes, dental lotions, coatings, lacquers, printing inks, natural gums, pigments, intermediates, dye solutions, antifreeze, fuel additives, paint additives and de-greasing fluids. It is also used as a chemical intermediate to create esters, halides, propyl amines and propyl acetate. The end-user markets of this product are the cosmetics, cleaning, motor, printing, coatings and chemical industries.

1-propanol is also used as fuel in engines due to its high-octane count.  However, due to its expensive nature and low energy gains, it is not commonly used.

Commercial Uses
1-propanol is used as a solvent in antifoaming in cosmetics, perfumes, flavours, fragrances, air care products, cleaning and furnishing products, paints, coatings, inks, personal care products, soaps and window cleaner.

Pesticides
n-Propanol is used as an inert ingredient only; there are no registered pesticide products containing n-propanol as an active ingredient.
As an inert ingredient, n-propanol is a solvent and cosolvent in a number of pesticide products, including those used in agriculture, on animals, and on ornamental plants.

Other Uses
The propanol isomers are mainly used as solvents for coatings; in antifreeze compositions and household personal products; and as chemical intermediates for the production of esters, amines, and other organic derivatives.
Overall, the major use of n-propanol is as a solvent. In 1988, over 75% of the npropanol used in the United States was in this sector.
As a solvent, n-propanol is used principally in printing inks, paint, cosmetics (antiseptilc in soaps, lotions, and nail polishes), and pesticides

n-Propanol is used as an inert ingredient in a number of consumer products such as; antifouling paint, pesticide sprays sold for use in and around the home (bug killers, treatment for ornamental plants), and flea and tick sprays for cats and dogs.

n-propanol (boiling point: 97°C) and water (boiling point: 100°C) mixtures cannot distilled by simple distillation. Mixture has a minimum-boiling azeotrope (87.7°C, 71.7wt%). n-Propanol aqueous solution is fed to a tank temperature remained constant at 90°C. A volume of vaporized solution in tank can be changed by a water proportion of feed flow. A volume of vaporized solution can be measured by liquid level. Liquid level of solution shows nonlinearity and input multiplicities.

Storage and Handling
N Propanol liquid and vapour is highly flammable and must be kept away from excessive heat and all sources of ignition.It should be stored below 40°C in humidity-free conditions, avoid contacting with aldehydes, halides, halogenated organics, halogens, strong acids and strong oxidizers. In these conditions, it can be expected to remain stable and have a storage life of at least one year.
Exposure to N propanol can cause severe irritation to the eyes which may lead to corneal injury, impairment of vision and blindness. It is a mild skin irritant which can cause dryness, flaking and aggravation of existing dermatitis. Inhalation of N propanol can cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness and depression of the central nervous system. Ingestion of large amounts of the product may cause injury. Appropriate precautions including good ventilation and the wearing of the necessary personal protective equipment such as protective gloves and clothing along with eye and face protection must be observed.
