DMDM Hydantoin (DMDMH) is a long-standing, broadly-adopted and globally-approved preservative recognized as providing protection to consumers and their products alike.
DMDMH works by gradually releasing very low levels of formaldehyde to maintain the integrity, functionality, performance and appearance of cosmetic, personal care and hygiene products by preventing the growth of harmful bacteria.
Without such protection, consumer welfare could be in jeopardy, with bacterial contamination exposing consumers to the risk of infections, particularly those who have compromised skin or immune systems.

Peer-reviewed studies show that formaldehyde exposure from consumer products – for example cosmetics that are preserved with DMDMH – is negligible, and contributes little additional exposure to formaldehyde above those levels commonly found in household air from other sources such as furniture, carpets and fruit.
Instead, these trace levels of formaldehyde largely remain in the liquid product formulation (as needed and intended) so as to prevent growth of bacteria rather than being present in an inhalable state.

DMDMH is a 55% water-based solution of Dimethyl Dimethylol Hydantoin — ideal for both rinse-off and leave-on products.
It is compatible with most personal care ingredients, and due to its high water solubility, can be added to aqueous systems without being heated, making it easy to use.
DMDMH protects products such as shampoo, hair conditioner, creams and lotions including shaving cream, and other water-based cosmetics and toiletries.
DMDMH belongs to the formaldehyde-donor preservative group.
Like other preservatives from this group (Imidiazolidinyl Urea, Diazolidinyl Urea), it is highly efficient against both Gram positive and Gram negative Bacteria.
A highly durable substance, DMDMH is active at low concentrations, effective over a wide range of pH (3 to 10) and can withstand temperatures up to 80°C.
When exposed to temperatures lower than 15°C, crystallization of the product is possible but heating the material will revert this phenomenon, without effecting DMDMH’s efficacy.
DMDMH is recommended to use at concentrations of 0.15% to 0.4%.
It is also recommended for use in combination with Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC), Parabens, or Isothiazolinones to obtain broad spectrum coverage.
Its ease of handling, stability, and cost-effectiveness make DMDMH an excellent preservative.

DMDH is a broad-spectrum, high-efficiency antibacterial preservative that resists Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, molds, yeasts, etc. by releasing formaldehyde, and has good compatibility with various emulsifiers and surfactants. It remains stable over a wide range of pH and temperature ranges. It is a low-toxic product that can be used in a variety of cosmetics and personal care. The maximum concentration is 0.6%. It can also be used in cosmetics after it is combined with iodopropynyl butyl carbamate. Anti-corrosion and sterilization of products such as shampoos, conditioners, shaving products, foundations, lotions, creams, baby products, sunscreens and cleaning agents (water-rinsed products).

DMDM hydantoin, English DMDM Hydantoin, is a five-membered nitrogen-containing saturated heterocyclic compound. It can be regarded as a product formed by two condensations of one molecule of glycolic acid and one molecule of urea. It is a derivative of imidazole and belongs to the class of bis-lactams and imides. It can release hypochlorous acid and hypobromous acid when it acts with water. It is a new type of highly effective antiseptic and bactericide. The freezing point is -11 degrees, and it maintains stable antibacterial properties in the aqueous phase and oil-water emulsion. It can inhibit Gram-negative and positive bacteria and has certain inhibitory effects on yeasts and molds. It can be compatible with various components present in cosmetics. The test results show that its antibacterial ability is not affected by additives such as surfactants, proteins and emulsifiers in cosmetics. This is a preservative in cosmetics.

The DMDM itself decomposes into formaldehyde during the placement process, so many authorities describe it as a slight aldehyde. Therefore, there is no 100% DMDM, only a mixture of DMDM and formaldehyde, but the content is different.

DMDM Hydantoin is a controversial chemical and is therefore suspected of causing immunotoxicity. The source is the comprehensive legislative and research literature of China, Canada, US federal agencies, California, Japan and the European Union.

It is also suspected of causing skin or sensory system toxicity. The source is the comprehensive legislative and research literature of China, Canada, US federal agencies, California, Japan and the European Union.

Preservative working principle
Preservative, acid resistant, suitable for acidic formulas, used in shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics; DMDM is dihydroxy dimethyl, DMDM hydantoin uses formaldehyde to produce an environment in which microorganisms are not suitable, In order to achieve the antiseptic effect, there is a certain risk of skin allergies.

DMDMH damage to the skin
Forming an unsound stratum corneum

Preservatives can make epidermal cells immature, loose in structure, make the epidermis thinner, and susceptible to external stimuli; and abnormal keratinization, making the skin rough, dull, and deteriorating.

Accelerate cell aging

Preservatives will flatten and age the cells, reduce the absorption of the skin, and weaken the defense. The protein that ages outside the nucleus increases, causing the skin to gradually lose its elasticity and easily cause slack and fine lines.

Damaged cell DNA

Preservatives will affect the DNA of cells in the accumulation of cells, so that the damage of cells will be continuously replicated in the cell division and reproduction, so that the new cells are “congenitally damaged” and “passed from generation to generation”, which profoundly affects the skin texture.

Contrary to whitening and anti-aging ingredients

With age, whitening and anti-aging are needed by everyone, and preservatives are in conflict with whitening and anti-aging effects, which will make the product more effective.

Accumulate in the stratum corneum

Preservatives accumulate in the stratum corneum and are difficult to remove, which will accumulate various negative effects of preservatives, and the damage to the skin will be deepened.

Protecting the environment is vital

Preservatives protect products from microbial contamination during the production, storage, transportation and consumer use of daily chemical products, thereby preventing product spoilage and preventing consumers from being exposed to pathogenic bacteria and their metabolites. Health risks.

For example, purulent bacterial contamination can cause skin and eye infections. Analysis of patient data based on the survey also shows that cosmetic microbial contamination is the second largest cause of skin disease in users.

In addition, if there is no preservative in the cosmetics, the cosmetics will expire in a short time, and the quality will be spoiled. In order to ensure that the product does not deteriorate, it may need to be stored in the refrigerator or in a single-use package. This is not conducive to operation, nor environmentally friendly.

Preservatives are widely used in various countries

Preservatives have been safely used in daily chemical products such as cosmetics for decades. Preservatives are allowed in products such as cosmetics in many countries around the world.

For example, tens of thousands of cosmetics in the United States, Canada, Europe and other countries have added preservatives.

Some preservatives used in cosmetics are allowed to be used even in foods. For example, parabens and their sodium salts, sodium sulfite, sorbic acid, etc. are clearly listed in the list of food additives that are allowed to be added in China.

The US Food and Drug Administration lists Kasson in a list of substances that can be used for indirect food contact, allowing it to be used in food and utensil detergents, and so on.

It is safe to use a preservative that meets the requirements.

Different countries have established strict access lists for cosmetic preservatives, limiting the maximum allowable concentration, scope of use, restrictions and labeling requirements to ensure the safe use of preservatives.

At the same time, the relevant state regulatory authorities will also adjust these requirements in a timely manner in conjunction with the latest toxicological assessment results. When the use of preservatives in cosmetic formulations meets national regulations, it will not cause harm to human health.

It is important to retain multiple types of preservatives

The choice of preservative system in the product is not a simple addition process. In the actual selection process, it is necessary to comprehensively consider various factors such as safety, stability, and scope of application.

For example, some preservatives have a better inhibitory effect on bacteria and some preservatives may only have an effect on fungi. Some preservatives are only effective in low pH formulations and some preservatives can be used in wide pH values. All work within the scope. Therefore, it is important to retain multiple types of preservatives.

Therefore, as long as the preservative components contained in the product are used within the relevant scope, it is actually quite safe and will not cause harm to human health.

The conditions, scope of use and limits of use of these preservatives mentioned above are also based on rigorous scientific research and experiments. Through safety assessments, there is no need to fear preservatives.

DMDM HYDANTOIN 55%
With the trade name Glydant, DMDM Hydantoin releases antimicrobial formaldehyde making it one of the most efficient artificial preservatives in the world. It is an organic compound that finds its place in the hydantoins class of compounds. The compound finds extensive use in the cosmetics industry as an active preservative for products like:

Being an effective preservative, DMDM Hydantoin is used in the concentrated form of 1 per cent. As mentioned earlier, it is a donor of formaldehyde making it capable of creating a not-so-favourable ambience within the cosmetic product for microorganisms to thrive.

Skin care products
Shampoos
Hair gels and
Hair conditioners

APPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS OF DMDM HYDANTOIN:
The compound is a favourite among mass producers of cosmetics and skin care products all over the globe. It has shown efficiency when it comes to slowing down the spoilage rate of products and improve their shelf life.
The compound is one of the best antimicrobial agents that helps prevent the growth of yeast, fungi and harmful dermatological bacteria that if left unchecked can result in skin rashes, and related illnesses in users.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:
In recent years, DMDM Hydantoin found itself in a fix after several independent studies and researchers concluded that, if used excessively as a preservative in cosmetic formulations, it can result in cancer. It works as a preservative by slowly releasing formaldehyde, which is a strong eye, skin and lung irritant. On top of that, DMDM Hydantoin can easily get contaminated with cancer-causing agent formaldehyde. Formaldehyde when comes in contact with human tissue often triggers a strong response from the immunity system that leads to cases of:

Burning sensation
Uncontrollable itching or
Scaling of the skin
One might think that it is all bad news for DMDM Hydantoin but that is not the case. As per the information put forth by the PCPC (or Personal Care Products Council) DMDM is one of those preservatives that release a small amount of formaldehyde over time to keep bacteria and mould formation at bay.

Further, as per the toxicology reports put forth by the IJT (or International Journal of Toxicology), cosmetics and skin care product manufacturers can use DMDM Hydantoin as a preservative given they are not exceeding the recommended amounts.

Adding to that, CIR (or the Cosmetic Ingredient Review) which is an independent panel of experts that uses scientific methods to conduct research on the ingredients mass producers of cosmetics use in their products, concluded that the compound is safe to use. The recommended level for DMDM Hydantoin, as stated by the experts of Personal Care Products Council is 0.074 % or less. Back in the year 2005, the expert’s panel of CIR repositioned DMDM Hydantoin as a safe preservative ingredient and cleared it for use in personal care products.

CONCLUSION:
What one can take away from the sections mentioned above is that DMDM hydantoin is safe as a preservative ingredient given it is used in recommended levels as put forth by apex bodies like CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel) and CDEU (Cosmetics Directive of the European Union).
