Aminomethylpropanol is a very efficient amine for neutralizing the carboxylic acid moieties in acid-functional resins to make them suitable for use in water-borne coatings and other aqueous applications.
2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol is an aminoalcohol. Amines are chemical bases. They neutralize acids to form salts plus water. These acid-base reactions are exothermic

Aminomethyl propanol is also called AMP or AMP 90 or AMP 95.

Aminomethyl propanol is an organic compound with the formula H2NC(CH3)2CH2OH.

AMP-90 is 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol containing 10 % added water.
This colorless, mobile liquid with a relatively low viscosity remains liquid at temperatures as low as 4°C to permit easy, convenient handling.

Uses
In latex emulsion paints, Aminomethyl propanol is a very efficient co-dispersant for pigments.
In addition, Aminomethyl propanol contributes pH stability, low odor, and anticorrosive properties; furthermore, it promotes acceptance of colorants.
Aminomethylpropanol is an effective emulsifier for polyethylene and wax by either the normal emulsification techniques or those requiring pressure.
Aminomethylpropanol is a very efficient amine for neutralizing the carboxylic acid moieties in acid-functional resins to make them suitable for use in water-borne coatings and other aqueous applications.
Such coatings formulations exhibit higher gloss and greater water resistance than do formulations based on other neutralizing amines.

Corrosion in boiler-water systems can be controlled successfully by use of AMP-95 as the amine additive to remove CO2.

AMP-90 is a high performance alkanolamine, proven as a multifunctional additive for metalworking fluids.

It is a highly efficient alkalinity enhancer which also provides corrosion inhibition properties.
The use of AMP-95 will often improve the blostability of these fluids, which can result in longer fluid life.

Aminomethyl propanol is the least aggressive amine towards the cobalt binder in carbide tooling.
As an added feature, Aminomethyl propanol enhances the performance of triazine biocides, while reducing levels of airborne formaldehyde.
AMP-90 does not contribute to ammonia release as do other amines.

Aminomethyl propanol is an important additive for the personal care industry.
It is compatible with virtually all fixative resins.
Its high base strength and low molecular weight allow formulators to use significantly less AMP-95 for resin neutralization.
AMP-90 possesses liquid phase corrosion inhibition properties, especially useful for the protection of aerosol cans containing aqueous based formulations.

It can also be used to neutralize Carbomer resins, in emulsification together with stearic acid, and to make amides and other derivatives used as cosmetic ingredients (CTFA/INCI designation: Aminomethyl propanol).

Aminomethylpropanol also functions in dilute aqueous solutions containing small amounts of formaldehyde to scavenge that which otherwise might be released to the atmosphere.

Uses
Latex emulsion paints

Waterborne coatings
Aminomethyl propanol is a very efficient amino alcohol for neutralizing acid-functional resins to make them suitable for use in water-borne coatings and other aqueous applications.
Such coatings formulations exhibit higher gloss and greater water resistance than do formulations based on other neutralizing amines.

Paper coatings
Aminomethyl propanol is used for the dispersion of TiO2 and also to control the water retention and mottling.

Boiler water systems
Corrosion in boiler-water systems can be controlled successfully by use of Aminomethyl propanol as the amino alcohol additive to remove dissolved CO2.

Aqueous solutions and metalworking fluids AMP-90 also functions in dilute aqueous solutions containing small amounts of formaldehyde to scavenge that which otherwise might be released to the atmosphere.
This makes Aminomethyl propanol a good additive for use in metalworking fluids.
In addition, Aminomethyl propanol improves the longevity of use-diluted fluids, does not leach cobalt, and enhances the performance of certain approved biocides.

Water-based paints based on latex dispersions:
AMP is a very effective co-dispersant for pigments. In addition, AMP helps stabilize the pH, has a low odor, and has anti-corrosive properties, and also helps to increase the color fastness of dyes.

Polyethylene and wax emulsions:
AMP is an effective emulsifier used in standard emulsification methods or emulsification at elevated pressures.

Water based coatings:
AMP is a very effective amine that can be added to coating formulations to neutralize carboxylic acid moieties when using acid-functional binders.
The neutralization of acid groups allows such binders to be used in water-based coatings and other water-based formulations.
AMP coating formulations have higher gloss and better water resistance than other neutralizing amine formulations.

Water for steam boilers:
Corrosion in steam boilers can be successfully controlled by using  AMP as an  amine additive in boiler water (to remove CO2).

Lubricating and cooling liquids (coolant):
AMP is a highly active alkanolamine used as a multifunctional coolant additive.
AMP in coolant is a  highly effective alkalinity enhancer that also provides corrosion inhibition.
It is resistant to microbial degradation and does not leach cobalt.
As an additional function,  AMP increases the effectiveness of triazine-based biocides while reducing formaldehyde pollution in the air.
AMP does not contribute to the release of ammonia, unlike some other amines.

Personal hygiene products:
AMP is compatible with virtually all fixing resins.
Its high base strength and low molecular weight allows formulators to use significantly less AMP to neutralize resins.
It can also be used to neutralize Carbomer resins when emulsified with stearic acid.
This makes it possible to obtain amides and other derivatives of these substances, which are used as cosmetic ingredients.

Aqueous solutions:
AMP is also used in dilute aqueous solutions containing small amounts of formaldehyde to prevent formaldehyde emissions into the atmosphere.
