KH-560 is the first widely used coupling agent and has been used for 40 years.
One end of GPTMSs structure with reactive groups such as amino and vinyl, can react with epoxy, phenolic, polyester and other synthetic resin molecules.
The other end is alkoxy (such as methoxy, ethoxy etc.) or chlorine atoms which is connected with silicon.
These groups can be transformed into silanol in the hydrolysis in water solution or damp air.
And the formed silanol is able to react with surface hydroxyl of glass, minerals and inorganic filler.
Therefore, silane coupling agent is commonly used in silicate-filled epoxy, phenolic, polyester resin and other systems.

In addition, 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane can also be used for FRP production, in order to improve GPTMSs mechanical strength and resistance to wet environment.
The organic groups of the silane coupling agent are selective about the reaction of the synthetic resin.
Generally, these organic groups lack sufficient reactivity with synthetic resins such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, and thus the coupling effect for them is poor.
In recent years, new varieties of silane coupling agents with better coupling for polyolefins have been developed, but are limited in cost and other properties and are not yet widely used.
Silane coupling agent is also known as silane treatment agent.
3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilanes general formula is Y (CH2) nSiX3.
Wherein n is an integer of 0 to 3; X is a hydrolyzable group such as chlorine, methoxy, ethoxy and acetoxy; Y is an organic functional group such as a vinyl, an amino, an epoxy group, a methacryloyloxy group and sulfydryl.

The reactions of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane in a highly basic aqueous solution have been studied by multinuclear magnetic resonance and light scattering techniques.
The study has shown that in this peculiar chemical environment the alkoxy groups of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane undergo a fast hydrolysis and condensation which favor the formation of open hybrid silica cages.
The silica condensation reaches 90% at a short aging time but does not go to completion even after 9 days.
The highly basic conditions also slow down the opening of the epoxies which fully react only after several days of aging.
The epoxy opening generates different chemical species and several reaction pathways have been observed; in particular, the formation of polyethylene oxide chains, diols, termination of the organic chain by methyl ether groups and formation of dioxane species.
These reactions are slow and proceed gradually with aging; light scattering analysis has shown that clusters of dimensions lower than 20 nm are formed after two days of reactions, but their further growth is hindered by the highly basic conditions which limit full silica condensation and formation of organic chains.

The study of silanes and polymers with special functions is increasing and the development of materials from silane-based polymers follows this trend.
In this way, the hydrolysis of 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) was studied as a function of the hydrolysis time in solutions with 50% of alcoholic solvents by infrared spectroscopy.
3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane was verified that GPTMS was possible to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the chemical reactions involving the hydrolysis / condensation of GPTMS and the main kinetics variations during the process.
The results suggest that up to 30 minutes of hydrolysis, the predominant reactions are hydrolysis of the alkoxy groups, with the generation of the Si-OH groups and alcohol, in this case methanol.
From 30 minutes, there is a large amount of silanols in the solution that tend to condense and form siloxane groups, which has this reaction accelerated from 60 minutes.
Already, from 70-80 minutes, the reactions tend to decrease the kinetics, due to the absence of silanols and the hydrolysis / condensation process.

The epoxy group in 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPS) readily undergoes hydrolysis in acidic conditions to form a solution containing principally the vicinal diol or a reaction product between the vicinal diol and the silanol groups formed during the hydrolysis (an alkoxysilane).
Additional reaction products include alkene, enol, low concentrations of carbonyl compounds, intermolecular condensation products, e.g. ethers, and reaction products specific to the acid used to promote the hydrolysis of the alkoxysilane and epoxy groups.
On evaporation of acidified GPS solutions at room temperature, a polymerized form of GPS is produced.
This polymer is found to be readily oxidized on heating in air and from simulated outdoor weathering trials (SODW), but not when formed on silica powders from a 1-2 wt% solution to form a coating.
In the absence of silica, unreacted hydroxy groups are readily available for oxidation, a result that is consistent with the reported molecular structure of polymerized GPS.

A chemical structure of a molecule includes the arrangement of atoms and the chemical bonds that hold the atoms together.
The 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane molecule contains a total of 35 bond(s) There are 15 non-H bond(s), 9 rotatable bond(s), 1 three-membered ring(s), 2 ether(s) (aliphatic) and 1 Oxirane(s).
The 2D chemical structure image of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is also called skeletal formula, which is the standard notation for organic molecules.

The carbon atoms in the chemical structure of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane are implied to be located at the corner(s) and hydrogen atoms attached to carbon atoms are not indicated – each carbon atom is considered to be associated with enough hydrogen atoms to provide the carbon atom with four bonds.
The 3D chemical structure image of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is based on the ball-and-stick model which displays both the three-dimensional position of the atoms and the bonds between them.
The radius of the spheres is therefore smaller than the rod lengths in order to provide a clearer view of the atoms and bonds throughout the chemical structure model of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane.
For a better understanding of the chemical structure, an interactive 3D visualization of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is provided here.

The 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane molecule shown in the visualization screen can be rotated interactively by keep clicking and moving the mouse button.
Mouse wheel zoom is available as well – the size of the 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane molecule can be increased or decreased by scrolling the mouse wheel.
The information of the atoms, bonds, connectivity and coordinates included in the chemical structure of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane can easily be identified by this visualization.
By right-clicking the visualization screen, various other options are available including the visualization of van der Waals surface and exporting to a image file.

3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane Chemical Properties, Uses, Production

Silane Coupling Agents
3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is the first widely used coupling agent and has been used for 40 years.
One end of its structure with reactive groups such as amino and vinyl, can react with epoxy, phenolic, polyester and other synthetic resin molecules.
In addition, it can also be used for FRP production, in order to improve its mechanical strength and resistance to wet environment.
Its general formula is Y (CH2) nSiX3.
